I am going to try to really take it serious.. And I am very afraid haha You won't brick your laptop. Worst case scenario is that you would need to reinstall Windows if Linux won't work. The installers are pretty easy to use as long as you go with a beginner-friendly distro like Ubuntu or Mint.
It can be daunting at first but don't be disheartened! I'll second what others have said - get yourself a spare memory stick and burn a live image to it, so you can play around on Linux without wiping Windows from your hard drive.
I am going to check out Ubuntu for sure I'll check into that too. Glad I could help. I'd definitely recommend trying it out before you commit to it. There's also the option of partitioning your drive and having Windows and Linux without having to remove Windows, but that's getting into experienced territory.
