Wear smartphone on your belt? Carry laptop in your sack? Bring Surface Pro in your bag? Over weekend Microsoft's next version of Windows, known by code name "Blue" leaked out to the world via BiTorrent.

Over the past two days we dissected the operating system in every way possible from first look to screenshot images to ways to install the still buggy operating system. Now that the initial euphoria has passed, we can settle down and get a good look at what exactly will change in the operating system later this year when Windows Blue is rumored to be released.

One of the big changes is SkyDrive integration. Yes, the cloud app was part of Windows 8 from the release back in October of, but Blue brings even tighter combination between the cloud and desktop by adding the app to the Modern UI version of the Control Panel, which is actually the "Personalize" feature of the Windows 8 Start screen.

Yes, Microsoft, this is confusing. At any rate, confusion aside, the new SkyDrive feature makes things a bit simpler for customers. It is accessed from the Charms menu, which you can get to by clicking the Windows-C buttons or moving your finger or mouse pointer to the top or bottom right of the screen.

Like all things in Windows Blue, do not get your hopes up just yet. The "B" is not just for Blue, but also for Buggy. Storage use has not worked for me, despite numerous tries. Please try again later or try visiting SkyDrive on the internet".

For the record, the link provided also does not work. Files are better -- it provides options for automatic photo and video uploads and the options seem to work well. I tested it with a picture and everything went as it should.

You can change the settings based on image quality as well. Windows Blue is a leaked build and clearly not ready for public consumption, but it is fun to play around with in a virtual environment and it gives a sense of where the operating system is headed, both later this year, and into the future with Windows 9.

There are new and updated apps, new features and a slightly tweaked user interface among the most noticeable changes, some of which my colleague Alan Buckingham has already gone through. But how can you taste the goodies by yourself?

Surely, looking at a slideshow is simply not good enough. As a result, you have two options. First, you can dual-boot Windows Blue alongside your operating system of choice or install it as the sole option.

Second, you can spare yourself any potential issues and headaches in dealing with an early preview build and install Windows Blue on VMware Player or VMware Workstation -- two of the most popular software virtualization products.

But which one should you choose? VMware Player is free and features a straighfoward wizard that makes it easy to use, while VMware Workstation is designed for more advanced and demanding users that wish to have more control over the virtualization environment.

Unlike VMware Player, VMware Workstation is not free and requires users to pay for a license after the day trial runs out. Please be aware that if you plan on downloading the leaked Windows Blue ISO file from BitTorrent you do so at your own risk, so choose wisely.

T-Mobile will start selling iPhone 5 on April 12, for the lowest upfront-price among major carriers: The rest is paid off in monthly payments and for full price of the handset and no contract.

Ross Rubin, Reticle Research analyst, says the price "seems too good to be true". That's T-Mobile's big carrot, perhaps more than the new data plans. Customers walk out the door spending upfront for iPhone 5 what competitors sell the 4S for.

LTE launch cities are: Damnit, not San Diego. The carrier promises nationwide coverage by end of year. While Android rules the world, iPhone rules the roost. T-Mobile has good reasons for coveting the iconic handset, which could unlock lots of customer upgrades while stemming some customer losses to competing carriers.

That certainly was the case for Verizon, but less so Sprint. Surely T-Mobile would love even a small percentage of such sales success. The above chart is T-Mobile's comparison of its no-contract plans to options available from competitors.

Does this jive with your real-world experience? Supporting Simple Choice plans offering unlimited text, talk and data and no contractual commitment, T-Mobile assumes label "The Un-carrier", by placing emphasis on choice and freeing customers from forced lock-in.

The new rate plans are a huge risk that, if successful, could fundamentally change how Americans buy cell phones -- particularly if any of the Big Three offer something similar. Under T-Mobile's new plan, there are no subsidies, but customers pay full price, either upfront or by monthly payments over X number of months, usually There also is option for people to bring their own phones.

I haven't done a first-plush comparison but looks like the savings are more for people buying cheaper handsets with little data. For costlier smartphones and data plans, savings are iffy -- or so I say after only cursory comparison, without really number crunching.

During a press event, Legere tried to explain the new Simple Choice plans to dimwits like me. He makes a good case for greater transparency and simplicity about billing and customer costs. I have to agree -- then there is the whole subsidy model, which favors Apple and a few other manufacturers reaping big margins by invisibly keeping device prices high.

Legere claims that the wireless industry is broken, and he gets no dispute from me -- and judging from the live Twitter responses today -- nor from many other cell phone users. But complexity and hidden costs cut different ways.

T-Mobile's iPhone 5 pricing looks like less than other carriers, but there is still monthly commitment to pay off the phone. Reporter Brian Chen asks my question via Twitter, too, when looking over the new plans.

Zombieland the series will be produced as a pilot and make its way into your living room via Amazon Prime. Creator Paul Wernick says "Zombieland will strive to break the rules—action, adventure, thrills, chills and laughs and all packed into a half hour format".

These are lofty expectations here, so the show had better deliver now. Production has not yet started, so there is no release date yet announced, but in the meantime Prime customers have a quickly growing number of choices from the movie and TV show library.

Amazon is in a race with Netflix, which is also now producing original content. Windows Blue, the next Windows release, leaked onto the internet at the weekend. The file you want is 2. Launch VirtualBox and click New in the Manager.

VirtualBox will fill in the rest of the details for you. Next set the Memory Size. Accepting the recommended memory amount will likely be fine. On the next screen choose to "Create a virtual hard drive now" and click Create.

I always select the latter option. It takes a while to create a fixed size drive, but the operating system runs faster afterwards. Type in a name for the new virtual drive and choose a size for it. Again, accepting the default will likely be fine.

Click Create and VirtualBox will begin building the drive. It will probably take around 10 minutes or so to do this maybe more if like me you choose to convert some large videos at the same time.

The "Select start-up disk" window will open. If you just have the file residing on your hard disk, click the folder icon and navigate to it instead. Once selected, click Start and Windows 8 which is what the OS is referred to throughout will start to load.

The language screen will appear first. On the next screen, click the "Install now" button. Install windows only advanced " option. Click Next, and it will begin the installation process, rebooting when required.

Windows Blue will be up and running and you can begin trying it out for yourself. The program also tweaks the existing user interface, adding new buttons to facilitate creating folders and editing files within ISO images. Other buttons have been added for loading and extracting files from ISO images.

There are five options available -- users can both create new image files from scratch and burn existing image files to disc. A fifth option -- Backup -- allows users to create image files from physical discs.

The program promises to work with most major optical disc formats, including Blu-ray and most writable DVD formats, and claims to support all types of recordable drives. Google updates just keep on coming.

Two key areas of focus: Sharing and sharing -- as in primping photos and being better part of Communities. The updates are somewhat different for both platforms. In an unsurprising move, the iOS app picks up some features from Snapseed, which Google acquired last autumn.

Snapseed remains a separate app for iOS, and that's where the real Instagram-like photo-editing capabilities can be found. Reviews are generally positive on both platforms. Average rating for the new version is 4.

Overall average is 4. This such a great app, easy to navigate, very smooth and detailed. Amir Abdullah would "take this over facebook twitter and instagram. That's just my opinion but it just looks better and is the easiest to use.

It's better than I thought it would be. This is the place to go if you do. Shoud've done it a long time ago. But other reviewers see things differently. Similarly, Frank Chagas is "disappointed. Looks better but these Facebook-esque suggestions are a hindrance".

The update also promises dozens of other improvements and bug fixes. The headline new feature is the FileView plugin, which can be used to index and gather information about all files and folders within a specified path.

The plugin supports commands for scrolling through the file index, moving around the folder tree and selecting files for display or opening in a specific program. Also added are new Mouse Actions to support the scroll wheel, and Mouse Variables to provide the current X and Y position of the mouse in pixels or percentage.

A dialog layout problem with right-to-left languages has also been resolved. Born as two flagship devices built on the Windows Phone 8 platform, the HTC Windows Phone 8X and the Nokia Lumia could not be much further apart in delivering two polarizing user experiences.

In boxing terms, Windows Phone 8X is the light flyweight and Lumia is the super heavyweight, fighting each other with two different software and hardware skill sets for the "Best Windows Phone 8 smartphone" title.

But this one is a tough nut to crack as there are many aspects to consider. Price, performance, build quality, software and hardware features, dimensions, weight, look and feel, color trim, among others, are all very important when choosing a device that will likely be alongside you for two years.

First, let's talk about the dimensions. The Windows Phone 8X comes in at At a first glance the two smartphones are similar in footprint, however that impression changes shortly after holding them. The Windows Phone 8X feels small in the hand because of its highly-tapered edges and is comfortable to use and hold due to its textured back and low weight.

I have never once had the Windows Phone 8X slip from my hand. By comparison, the Lumia tells a different story that highlights the contrast between the two. The Nokia has rounded and not tapered edges that make it feel big in the hand, something that is easily noticeable after holding the Windows Phone 8X.

Furthermore, the handset has a more substantial weight and a very, very smooth back even with the matte colors, and especially with the glossy ones that make holding it more difficult and potentially more slippery.

After using the Windows Phone 8X and the Lumia for extended periods of time I have no doubt in saying that the Nokia-branded handset has the better build quality of the two. I could definitely see the latter making a dent in the floor and not the other way around.

But that's not the whole story, as there are other differences as well. One weak trait of the Lumia 's build quality -- and the only one I noticed thus far -- is the power button, which after a couple of days of use does not require the same firm press as the volume keys or the camera shutter button.

By comparison, the buttons on the Windows Phone 8X held up pretty well over time but they are flushed with the case and very difficult to find and press at times, especially the power key which is placed at the top of the handset.

Colors spruce up one's life. And the Windows Phone 8X and Lumia sure embody this philosophy. The former is available in Black, California Blue, Limelight and Red with a matte finish while the latter can be purchased in Black, Gray, Red, Yellow and White with a glossy or matte finish, depending on the color.

Looks are always subjective, but from my point of view the Windows Phone 8X features the less mature and futuristic design of the two. It's not boring, but it's not great nor impressive either to look at -- at least the bolder colors help.

On the other hand the Lumia has a more industrial design that looks more professional and high-tech. Let's talk display differences first. The Windows Phone 8X comes with a 4. From the two, I prefer the panel on the Lumia because it's both more lively and bigger.

Colors pop more and there's also less bleeding. As a bonus, the display can also be operated using gloves which is something to consider for folks in colder climates. The panel on the Windows Phone 8X, on the other hand, has more real-to-life colors and a higher pixel-per-inch density compared to the ppi on the Lumia 's display.

Sadly, it takes the second place because it has plenty of bleeding black is not quite black and the viewing angles are not as good as on the Lumia On the hardware forefront, the Lumia also takes the crown for features such as wireless charging which is not available on the Windows Phone 8X -- except on the Verizon model and extra storage 32GB of internal memory out-of-the-box.

Both are features to consider as wireless charging plates are cheap, while the extra storage is more than welcomed when there is no microSD card slot on either device. Windows Phone 8X has a bigger front-facing camera -- 2.

Both are not good I shall not call them crap, so comparing is similar to tasting and judging two mediocre apples. The best back-facing camera of the two is, undoubtedly, on the Lumia I managed to snap some pretty impressive pictures in pitch-dark conditions with the Nokia, while the HTC only delivered average-looking photos.

In good lighting conditions from my own experience the two are closer in terms of quality. After I got the Lumia I wrote a first-impressions review where I briefly discussed the apps that the Finnish manufacturer provides atop of Windows Phone 8.

After using the smartphone for longer I can definitely say that Nokia collection puts HTC's exclusive app collection to shame. HTC only offers weather, data and time apps, a photo enhancer and a couple other basic and not-all-that-valuable additions.

Smart Shoot is great for snapping a couple of pics at once and choosing the best one. Also, Nokia Xpress is a nice and basic browser that compresses websites as to use as little cellular data as possible. I've only touched the surface of what these exclusive apps can offer, but suffice to say I'm genuinely impressed by the added benefits.

Nokia even adds extra ringtones, alarm sounds and menus in Settings to further customize the experience. I have to point out that the I'm running the latest software update on the Lumia, which was announced by Nokia in mid-March.

The build also allows to clean temporary files, among other improvements, a feature not yet available on the Windows Phone 8X. Unquestionably, Nokia is the manufacturer that brings more value to the table, whereas HTC places its faith more on the ecosystem.

Both Windows Phone 8X and Lumia are based on the same 1. The difference between the two smartphones, therefore, is practically non-existent. Both perform similarly in apps, games and run Windows Phone 8 just as good. What about battery life?

I use all my smartphones in a similar fashion -- answering and making calls, reading and writing texts, surfing the web here and there when I'm away, installing and using apps, etc. From this point of view both Windows Phone 8X and Lumia deliver decent results to be honest, I didn't benchmark either.

The latter has more potential to live through the day than the former because of the larger battery mAh vs mAh for Windows Phone 8X. In one instance I managed to get more than 24 hours of battery life from Lumia, with light gaming, browsing, calling, texting and surfing the web.

Windows Phone 8X is not that far off, however, managing to post similar results. This, as you might imagine, depends largely on usage patterns. Depending on where you live, you may find the Windows Phone 8X and the Lumia at two different price points.

In Europe, at various mobile operators, the former -- available at roughly EUR -- is significantly less expensive than the latter -- available at around EUR -- when purchased without a contract. HTC and Nokia have released two different smartphones that cater to two different kinds of needs.

Lumia is for people who want a great camera and build quality while providing more software benefits, meanwhile Windows Phone 8X pits itself as a light and comfortable to hold smartphone for people satisfied with the Windows Phone 8 ecosystem.

I've said this in my initial-impressions review for the Lumia and I say it again now -- Windows Phone 8X, to me, feels agricultural by comparison. All the little downsides add up to a point where I regret choosing it, so pick your Windows Phone 8 smartphone carefully.

I like the heft of the smartphone, which feels just right in my fairly large hands and appreciate the hardware and software improvements it brings along. The Nokia-branded handset is what I should have bought in the first place, a realization that, sadly, only came to me a little too late.

Windows Blue owns tech news for the past two days, from its leak to BitTorrent yesterday, to first-look articles today. While we all try to digest what is included in the next version of Windows, which really is more of an update to the current iteration, it really is much easier to get a sense by visual aid as opposed to listening to talking heads like me drone on with descriptions.

When I installed the leaked build, , yesterday and fired it up I was blown away by all of the changes Microsoft has made in what is essentially an interim update. Over the coming days I will take a more in-depth look at some of these things, but for now, I at least have plenty of screen grabs to try and illustrate what your next operating system will look like.

The addition of Metro versions of the Calculator now called Calculate and Sound Recorder are harbingers of the continued move away from the desktop and onto the Start screen. I am not saying the desktop will be gone when Windows 9 debuts rumored for late, but I think it will, at the very least, be squeezed out of the picture even further.

When Office gets there, then the move may be complete. Personally, as long as the apps are there in Metro, I don't really care, but I know the traditionalist change-haters will be out with fangs showing over this.

Yesterday, when writing about the Windows Blue leak, I emphasized the importance of Microsoft picking up the pace, by releasing new features faster.

Brandon LeBlanc says the updates will come today, but I surely don't see them yet -- so can't authoritatively write about refinements. Get used to it, these three updates tip changes ahead, like others, such as SkyDrive and Skype.

It's a new Microsoft, and the push to the cloud and subscription computing are major reasons, along with competitive need and BYOD. The company's longstanding priority providing backward-compatibility drags development. Some innovations are held back, while enterprise customers using the same software for years keeps new features out of market even if Microsoft releases them.

Microsoft lumbers along, in part because core customers do. As Microsoft pushes out more cloud and subscription products, the company seizes control of when customers get new features rather than IT organizations acting as bottlenecks or fussy workers whining about change.

There is more flow of ideas to innovation to implementation. Why invest millions of dollars developing something customers won't use? Cloud and subscriptions bring forward new features, giving Microsoft developers incentive to do more sooner.

Then there is the whole bring-your-own-device to work thing, which is nowhere as new as many analysts who want to sell services and reports or bloggers many of whom are too young to remember would have you believe.

The first cell phones, Palm Pilots and BlackBerries all came to the enterprise by the back door. What's different now is volume and the economy. However, there is a startling shift in costs -- to employee up rather than organization down.

Good finds that in half the companies with BYOD programs, employees pay for devices and supporting services, such as cellular data for cell phones, tablets and some laptops. Corporate IT is more willing to let employees use their own stuff, as long as they pay.

Consumers, unlike enterprises, accept -- even demand change. Shake it all up and suddenly some of the logjam shakes free and creates opportunity for Microsoft to speed up development and crank out new features as they are ready rather than save them up for big, cumulative releases.

Hence, enhancements to, say, Mail, Calendar and People apps ahead of any major changes to Windows. Actually, we haven't seen pace like this since the U. That's what these three updates mean and sudden pace developing Windows Blue.

So it's no surprise then that LeBlanc promises: This means that the experience on Windows PCs and tablets will keep getting richer". With Google cranking out updates fast and furiously, the approach is good business and is great for users.

There's nothing like competition to make products better. Last week, Digg revealed plans to build a replacement app for Google's soon-to-be-defunct Reader and compete with other services that have suddenly become popular, like Feedly and The Old Reader.

While I wait to someday have my OPML file uploaded to The Old Reader currently number 3, in the queue, I am trying out some other alternatives -- I really liked Feedspot, but updating seems spotty. We want to experiment with and add value to the sources of information that are increasingly important, but difficult to surface and organize in most reader applications — like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Reddit, LinkedIn, or Hacker News.

The company is continuing to gather suggestions from Reader refugees as it builds the app. In fact, it has set up a mailing list for news on the progress and it is complete with a Reader shutdown clock.

The tool works by resetting your Office trial to 30 days, and can be used a maximum of five times, giving you a theoretical maximum trial period of days -- with caveats, as we discuss below. The key fact is that you need to obtain a trial product key rather than sign up using your Microsoft Windows ID.
